Do You Have a Vision?

A vision is a high level outcome that you want to attain.  Companies use visions to help motivate their employees, shareholders and consumers about what they want to look like in the future.   Amazon’s vision is:”to be earth’s most customer-centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online.”  You also have examples from charity organizations such as The Alzheimer’s Association whose vision is “a world without Alzheimer’s disease.”   You can see that these visions are big outcomes that they want to attain and possibilities that these organizations are striving to reach.

Have you created a vision for your life or your career?  It can be a challenge to put together something that is so big and try to do it in only a few sentences.  A vision should be something that you want for yourself in the future that is inspiring, includes your values, uses concise language and is stated in the present tense.  It should be short enough to remember and long enough to contain what is important to you.  Look back at the examples above, they are inspiring, concise and stated as if they already happened.

What are the things that you have always wanted, but they seemed unattainable?  Have you thought about what the perfect job is for you or living in the place that makes you happy?  We all have those thoughts, but we tend to dismiss them.  Make a list of those things that you want in your life, capture your values and start creating a vision for yourself.  What if you actually focused on having those things in your life?  If you focused on moving towards that vision every day you would certainly have a better chance of reaching it.  Thinking about what is possible instead of what seems impossible can inspire new actions to help you reach your vision.  Spend a half hour putting your vision together.  You have nothing to lose and all the good things that you want in your life to gain!
