Monday Morning Leadership Q&A – 8/7/17

Client Question:  “I really want to start a new career, but I feel like I am too old .  Is it too late for me to do this now?”

That is a big fat NO!  It is never too late to do something new if that is what you want.  I am a prime example of someone who took on a new career later in life and I know so many others who are doing the same thing.   It is a bit of old thinking that once you reach a certain age you need to start thinking about retiring.  If that is what you want and you can do it, then go for it.  However, some people may not have the financial means or are just not interested in retiring yet.

At this point in your life, you can choose what you want to do.  You have so many great skills and experiences that you can take with you into your new role.   That experience will allow you to take what you know and apply it to the new role.  You can also share your knowledge with those who may not have had those experiences yet.  I am a big believer that everyone has something that they can teach to others as well as learn from others.   This may be a great opportunity for you to do some reverse mentoring and build some new relationships.   You can teach a millennial something new and they can teach you some new technology that you wanted to learn.

There are many people that have come before you that have done this successfully.  I have shared this before, but I think it is a great motivator to see what these people accomplished: People Who Became Successful after the Age of 40.   It can be really easy to talk yourself out of something that might be hard.  If you have passion for what you want to do and see it as a way for you to have want out of life, then you should do it.  If you need help, then ask for it, but don’t give up.
