Are You Going to Take This Motivational Advice?

I came across some of my favorite Jim Rohn quotes today.  He was an entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker.  Here is a link to his inspirational story if you would like to learn more about him.  When I first heard these quotes, they definitely made me stop and think about what I was doing with my career and my life.  They have stuck with me for a long time and they definitely apply to some of the posts from this week.

Here they are:

“Either you run the day or the day runs you.” – Jim Rohn

Yesterday I posted about ways to find more time in your calendar.  Don’t let everyone else fill up your calendar.  Block out time for you.  It is possible to find at least a half hour to focus on the things that are going to help you be more successful.  Remember that  you make choices each day on where you spend your time.   Be intentional and choose the right ones for you.

“Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day.” – Jim Rohn

What are the habits that you have in your life?  Do they help you to clear your mind, keep you healthy, allow you to think and focus on your priorities?  Do you need to change your daily routine?   Spend time deciding what you are missing and begin building those into your life. These are the things that will make you a stronger leader and be the foundation that you will rely on as you focus on your success.

“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.” – Jim Rohn

Make sure that you are driving what happens in your personal and professional life.   No one else knows all the things that you want, so you need to drive the direction in order to accomplish those things.  This may call for you to display the courage of saying no to a plan that someone else has for you.  If you trust your gut and know that it isn’t the right plan for you, then say no and keep moving forward to get what you want.  If your goal is to be reached, then you will need to stand up for what you want in your life and career.

“If you want to be a leader who attracts quality people, the key is to become a person of quality yourself.” –  Jim Rohn

Focusing on your own development and knowing who you are is key for this one.  You most likely have a vision in your head of the type of leader that you want to be.  Take small steps every day to move towards that vision.  You will be a leader who builds a team that complements your skills, asks for help when you need it and cares about the development of the people that you connect with every day.  People will see that you are demonstrating those qualities and be drawn to work for you.

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohn

Do you think about the people you spend the most time with every day?  This isn’t something that you may have ever reflected upon, but it is important.  If you want to be challenged and grow, then you need to be around people who will push you out of your comfort zone to do more than you thought was possible.  Look at your list of five and decide if you need to do an upgrade.  This doesn’t mean you abandon everyone in your life, but you intentionally move towards the people that can help you develop and learn the most.  Choose people who are ahead of you on the journey that you want to go on.  Ask them to share their success and failure, so you can learn from them and accelerate down your path much faster.
