Can You Focus on What Could Go Right?

I was helping my neighbor with a printer issue that she was having the other day. She said to me “I don’t know why this technology stuff is so hard for me.” I told her that a lot of people have a fear of messing something up when they do new things with technology. What causes that fear? Is it just a mental block that they have? For many people it is just the unknown and it feels overwhelming.

I think we all have mental blocks and fears about things that we are doing for the first time. Being able to conquer that fear can be a challenge. Finding someone to mentor you through the first time can definitely help. If that isn’t an option, what if you just tried something to see what happened? Usually the fear of trying something is worse than actually doing it. Think about some of the “firsts” that you have already been through. You may have struggled at first, but then you conquered them. When you look back on those things now, they really weren’t that scary after all.

Remember that your thoughts drive your actions, so believing that you can accomplish the first step makes a big difference. Will Smith said “The first step is you have to say that you can.” Stop thinking about all the things that could go wrong and instead focus on what could go right. Think about the things that you have been wanting to try, believe that you can accomplish them and just do them.
