Monday Morning Leadership Q&A – 9/4/17

Client Question: “Someone asked me if I am fulfilled in my job.  I am not sure how to answer this question.   Can you help me to understand this for myself?”

It is pretty easy to be able to explain what you do to people, but why you do it requires more reflection.  It takes more effort to delve deep and understand your motivation.  Knowing your “why” is what helps you share the reasons you do what you do and connect to others on a deeper level.  This is the part that will come through when you introduce yourself or pitch a product to people for the first time.

Knowing your “why” is good to be able to share with others, but more importantly, it is key for you to see if you are fulfilled in your job.  Why do you get out of bed in the morning?  Why do you start early and work late?  Why did you say yes and volunteer for the project that no one else may want?  Of course there are superficial answers that you could give here, but what if you went to the next level to answer those questions.  This article by Simon Sinek called  “What’s The Difference Between Fulfillment and Happiness? gives a great example of helping someone to do this for themselves.  Spend some time doing this same thing for yourself.  Ask yourself some of these why questions and keep reflecting until you can answer what drives you each day.

For those of you in the US, today is the Labor Day Holiday in the US.  Typically this is a day that brings family and friends together, to enjoy a cookout and a day off of school or work.  Celebrate the time off and do something that makes you happy.  Having the extra day off can be just what you need to recharge your batteries and see things with more clarity.  It may be just what you need to figure out if you are happy and fulfilled!.
