What have you done for yourself in the last few months or over the last year? This week’s posts have been focused on how you are spending your time and if you are spending any of it investing in yourself. Today will be focused on how you can do that from a professional standpoint.
Work will always be busy. There will always be more meetings to attend than you have time for and people pulling at you to get more done. What if you built some boundaries in to your calendar for your own development just like it is another meeting? Here are some ideas that you could think about doing for yourself:
- Plan on attending a conference that would help you learn more about your area or connect you with someone who could be a great resource for you.
- Sign up for a class that would help you learn something new. There are so many options to take classes online or in person now, that there can be no excuse. Many of these don’t even cost anything.
- Attend networking events to meet new people to expand your network.
- Go back and get the next degree if you feel it would help you professionally.
- Meet with a mentor who already knows what you want to learn and is willing to share with you.
You need to find the time to invest in yourself. If you don’t value your time and your development, then no one else will either. Start scheduling time into your calendar to focus on your own development efforts. We have to stop looking at our own development as a nice to have and instead make it a priority.
