Have you ever made a really big decision and then instantly regretted it? I think we all have at one time or another. Most of the time it happens when you are buying something that costs a lot of money and you are trying to justify the purchase to yourself. It can also happen when you are making a career move. Should you take this new role with a lot more responsibility or stay where you are comfortable? Do you take a role that requires you to move and impacts your whole family? These are really big decisions that are not easy to make. You may be the type of person who makes a pros/cons list, asks for input from others or trusts your gut to make your choice. You will never have a 100% guarantee on any decision that you make, so you have to make the best one that you can and move forward.
When you look back at a big decision that you made, do you find that that it was the right one? It may not have gone exactly the way that you planned, but in hindsight was the decision the right one? Did you learn something new or meet a person that influenced you to do more that you thought you ever could? Would you go back and do anything different? Most people would say that even though it may not have gone as planned, they are still happy that they went through the experience. There is always something to learn in any new situation and it will move you out of your comfort zone to a place that you didn’t think was possible.
As you approach the next big decision, what if you thought of it as a challenge that could prepare you for a future opportunity? Does it help you look at it differently? If you look back on your career to see all of the accomplishments and successes that you have had, it was because you took a risk. Looking at big decisions from a positive perspective opens you up to try new things, even though they may seem big at first. You have already had so many successes in your journey and this will just be one more to add to the list.
