There have been a lot of discussions about the future of work and how it is in the process of evolving. We will no longer work at one place and stay there for years. The research is showing that people will change jobs at least 9 times throughout the course of their career. Roles that are more entrepreneurial, consulting or focused on multiple things will be more of the norm. It is becoming more of a “gig” economy where people may have multiple things that they are working on to equate to a full time role. To support these changes you are seeing more office buildings where you can lease an office, pay for open workspace or work from anywhere in the world thanks to technology advances.
All of these changes challenge the definition of what the path of success used to be for employees. It also means that they can define what success means for them. They may want more freedom to travel and still work or work on multiple things because they enjoy the variety. This isn’t for everyone, but it does make you think about what success could look like for you in this changing environment.
Leadership will also not follow the traditional model anymore. You may not lead one team in one company, but you may lead multiple teams in multiple companies. You may be leading change for your own company and using virtual people to get the work done. You may be working in a corporate role, but also having a “side hustle” to tap into your entrepreneurial side. There will not be one path that everyone will follow anymore. We need to think about what that means for our leadership. It may not be attaining a certain level anymore or making a certain amount of money. It may be that you have the freedom to travel, spend time with your family and still having the financial stability that you need. How will we change our own view of success and redefine it for ourselves and those around us?
