Have you ever worked for someone who is negative, doesn’t treat you with respect, blames you for everything that goes wrong and takes credit for what you have done? I really hope that you haven’t, but unfortunately it tends to happen more often than not. It makes it really difficult to go to work every day when you don’t know what this person may do that will cause you issues.
What should you do? Most of the time the advice is to try to wait out the bad boss. If that person doesn’t look like they are leaving any time soon or you just can’t deal with it any longer, then you may need to make a different decision. This is really a challenge when you really like your company and your job. You have to consider what staying means for you. Here are some things to ask yourself:
- Will I be able to still grow and develop?
- Is my manager respected by other people?
- Is this person putting me down and making me look bad in front of others?
- Is my credibility going down because of this situation?
- Is this stress affecting my health?
- Am I being left out of the loop on information?
- Do other leaders, besides my manager. still see me as someone that the company should invest in for future roles?
- Am I losing the respect of the organization if I stay?
These are all tough questions to answer and require a lot of soul searching to see what the right answer is for you. You will also need to think about what this decision means for you, your health and your family. Weighing out the pros and cons is an important step to make the best decision on whether you should stay or leave.
