How Would You Rate Your Communication ?
Communication with the people that you work with in an organization is one of the most important things that you do each day. It is how you stay aligned with teams and managers, delegate and develop your team, get things done and discuss big decisions and recommendations. Most people would say that they are good communicators, but the proof of whether that is true or not has to come from the person who is receiving the message.
If you did a self-assessment using the following questions, what would your answers be? Now if you asked the people that you work with these same questions, what do you think they would say about you?
- Is my communication clear, succinct and easy to follow in meetings?
- Am I able to clearly communicate what I want when delegating or making requests?
- What do I do to demonstrate confidence when I share information?
- Is there anything that I can do to improve my communication?
Typically, information about what we are doing comes to us from feedback when we aren’t doing things in the best way. Wouldn’t it be better to proactively take the initiative to find out how you are doing so you can make corrections if you need to improve?
Asking for feedback is a good way to know for sure how you are perceived. We all have blind spots and sometimes we need someone else to share information with us, so we can see them. How closely is your self-assessment aligned to the answers that you received from others? What did you learn about your style and how you are perceived? Are there changes that you want to make?
