Today’s Client Question: “I took this role 2 years ago and I really loved it. Now it just feels like the same old thing every day. I am not sure what to do?”
Let’s start back at the time when you took the role. What was it that made you so excited to take it? Was it a promotion or more responsibility? What did you think you would get from taking on this role? Looking back now, how would you assess what you have learned? Answering reflective questions like this can help you understand your motivation for taking the role.
Next, it is important to understand what has changed for you since you took the role. Have you mastered all that you feel that you can in this role? Do you just need something to re-energize you about this role again? What would need to change for you to feel the same way that you did in the beginning? What if you tried looking at the things in your current role with a fresh eye to see what else could be done differently? Looking at these kinds of questions can help you understand if you want to stay where you are.
Do you want to take on a new role? It is really easy to stay in a role and be comfortable. You know everything for the most part and how things work. Taking on something new will require you to go back into learning mode and being uncomfortable. Does that sound exciting to you? Are you a leader who is motivated by learning new things? Do you need any additional skills to make this type of move? Is there a role that excites you in your current organization or would this be a bigger change outside of your company? Making a change would give you new perspective, excitement and motivate you again.
Feeling some discontent comes along for everyone who has been in a role for a while. What would help you feel engaged again? Depending on where you are in your career journey, the answers will differ. It is good to evaluate how your career is aligning with your priorities and values. Going through this process of reflection and how you feel is an important step. Pay attention to your gut when you are asking yourself these questions. Which option feels like the right thing to do and will make you happy?
