What Makes a Good Interview for Candidates?

Whenever someone I am coaching is preparing to go through an interview, we talk about what they are going to say for certain questions.  Being prepared with examples helps the interviewee be ready so they are able to answer the questions with ease and without hesitation.  We also talk about what questions they are going to ask the interviewer.  Taking this job needs to be a good fit for both parties, so the interviewee needs to ask their own set of questions of the interviewer.  This article by Sjoerd Gehring has some great questions to ask during your future interview.  Here are a few examples from the article that can really drive a good conversation:

  • “Why Does This Role Matter to the Growth of the Company?”
  • “Could I Meet Some of the People That I Would Be Working With?”
  • “Why Did the Person Who Had the Role Leave?”
  • “What Do You Like Most About Working Here?”
  • “Do You Have Any Reservations About Me or My Qualifications?”
  • “How Do You Deal With Professional Disagreements Within This Team?”

There may be additional questions that you want to include that are specific to the role that you are interviewing for as well.  Being able to ask your own set of questions as the interviewee allows you to really learn more about the company and the people who work there.  Interviewers should also ensure that they are prepared to answer these questions if they get them.  An interviewer needs to provide good information, so that the interviewee can decide if the role is a good fit for them too.  Going through the interview process should always be an opportunity for both sides to get all the information that they can to be able to make a good decision.
