How Clear Is Your Communication?

Communication is something that most people do without thinking about it.

They speak in a way that makes sense to them in meetings and assume that their message is being heard. If they don’t share the information in a clear and concise way then their message may not be getting through and they have no idea. Unclear communication can create a perception among their leadership that they aren’t ready for a higher level role. Why is it so challenging to communicate in a good way?

“Workplace communication is an essential function of any productive business environment. Yet 86% of employees and executives blame the lack of effective collaboration and communication as the leading causes for errors in the workplace.” This quote is from an article called, 11 Remarkable Workplace Communication Statistics to Know which also states that Gartner Research has found that 70% of poor communication leads to corporate errors. With those kinds of numbers, it is hard to believe that people in organizations are still able to deliver what is needed to be successful.

How can you communicate in a concise way that demonstrates you are strategic and supports the visibility you are trying to create?

  • Identify what message you want the other person or group to take away from the conversation
  • Begin with the context of the situation or topic that you will be presenting
  • Share 3 focused points that further explain what you need them to hear and understand
  • Finalize what action is needed (decision needs to be made, a recommendation is shared, informing the team for alignment)

Imagine if leaders could communicate more clearly and it improved the communication error rates in their own company? It would create stronger collaboration and people would not have to do rework.
