The Risks of Assumptions

Let’s not assume anything …

Many clients will state something that they believe to be true when it is really an assumption. It happens to everyone. We believe something that we have been told and react to that information as the truth.

Here is an example: Someone is applying for a new role. They came from a similar role at another company and assume that the new company will operate in the exact same way. My role as their coach is to ask the question that they haven’t considered. Is that true? Will that company operate in the same way? Do you know that for a fact? They have to concede that they don’t know that which makes them more open for how the company could operate.

Here is another example: You want to have a conversation with someone but you assume that they are too busy for you or that they would never want to talk to you. What if you eliminate those assumptions and simply ask them if they have time to meet? Yes, you need to have a topic to talk about. It could be an informational interview to learn about their career (people love to share their career journey), planning for your future career, asking about a project or asking for their feedback on something. If they say no, it may just be a not yet. Don’t take the no personally. Make the meeting worth their while and they will make it happen.

We don’t always slow down to ask those questions for ourselves. What if you did? Could it help you have more clarity, understanding, make better decisions, have stronger relationships and get things done faster?

Check in on the beliefs you have to see if they are facts or assumptions. Once you consider that it might be an assumption, then you open up a world of possibilities of what it could be instead. It allows for better conversations to ensure that there is alignment and true understanding of the facts.
