How Do Others Perceive Your Value?

Are You Adding Value?

If you struggle to show your value, you are not alone. You try to do everything perfectly so you will get feedback from your management that you have done it…however, the feedback you hoped for never comes.

So what happens next for you?

You get frustrated.

You disengage.

You become skeptical that the recognition you crave will ever come.

You may even feel that you are wasting your time.

Let me share an example of what this looks like:

Mary is a self-professed people pleaser. She is someone who works hard to help and support other people. She travels to multiple sites and does training and coaching of employees. However, she has noticed that one of her senior leaders has been cutting her off during conversations lately. Dismissing her in multiple situations in front of other people which feels so embarrassing for her. She wonders what is going on. There has been no feedback given to her explaining what is different.

As she shares what happened in the situations to me in a coaching session, the puzzle pieces begin to fall into place. Here are the areas where she has the opportunity to do something different:

  • She offers to do things that aren’t in her responsibility to people please and get validation from her senior leader.
  • She communicates way too much and isn’t specific enough about what she needs.
  • She isn’t pushing to get specific feedback.
  • She isn’t showing or talking about what she is doing in a way that her management sees the value of it.
  • She isn’t valuing herself enough to speak up and ask for what she wants and to know that her work matters.
  • She is spending her time on the wrong things and it won’t get her to the outcome that she wants…to be noticed.

Coaching provides a good mirror for a client. Mary couldn’t see the blind spots in her leadership. When we coached on these scenarios, she was able to shift her thinking and see that she was focusing on the wrong things. Her time was spent on only doing the work, but she realized that she wasn’t talking about what she was doing in a way that the value could be perceived by others.

Have you taken the time to assess how your value and visibility are perceived by your senior leadership team and other influencers in your company?
