Networking for Influence and Visibility

Every week I talk to clients who are so busy and have calendars that are filled with meetings. When we talk about meetings that they say they want to have with influencers, they tell me that there is no time.

That may be true some days, but I ask them if they can identify one 30 minute slot per week that could be used for networking. Of course they have at least 30 minutes, it just needs to be prioritized.

Identify who you want to meet with and get the meetings on the calendar, so it is done. Here is why these sessions can be impactful to you:

– At the end of the year, you will have 52 connections (internal or external) that you have a stronger relationship with and they know more about you.

– If you choose these contacts internally, they can see the value that you bring and think of your for future opportunities, help you move projects forward, and share advice.

– One or more of these contacts could become a mentor or sponsor for you.

– They could recommend other connections for you to meet with inside or outside of your organization.

– If you need help in the future, they already know you and when you ask them for what you need, they are much more likely to help you.

– Offer to help them with a challenge that they have and show them the value that you can bring.

– Ask them questions to learn about their career journey, (What helped them to get where they are today? What skills are needed to help someone be successful? What lessons have they learned that they could share with you?)

Whether you are remote or in person, this is about building stronger relationships with influential people who can help you in your career. It is important to have a strategy to be more visible that you focus on executing consistently.

I will leave you with this one last thing to consider, a study of 1,000 remote employees in the U.S. found that only 38% of them went out of their way to get noticed by their managers, but 85% of the people who did were successful. Why? Because most of them had visibility strategies. Isn’t 30 minutes or more of your time each week worth it?
